Greece could acquire the 12 used Rafale fighters by paying € 400 million in France, claims "La Tribune".
According to today's publication, the French newspaper adds that the amount will be paid to the French Ministry of Finance, not to the French Ministry of Defense, while the 6 new Greek Rafale will be additional and not part of the order of 28 fighters for the French Air Force. The 6 Greek aircraft will be delivered in 2022 , to be followed by the transfer of 28 Rafale to the Armee de l'Air from the end of 2022 to the end of 2024.
The subject of the Greek contract was placed on Tuesday by the French Minister of Defense, Florence Parley, in a hearing in the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense of the Senate. There, Parley allegedly did not refer to financial data of the issue and limited herself to repeating that the 6 new Greek Rafale will arrive in Greece in 2022 and that "up to 12" used fighters will be given from the stock of the French Air Force, to be satisfied. the Greek side. Nevertheless, the commission announces that it will monitor the progress of the sale of the 12 used fighters in Greece, since their transfer could create significant operational gaps for France.
In response, Parley said special care would be taken to increase the number of operational Rafale, including by restoring cannibalized aircraft. In addition to the 28 fighters, France will order another 12 Rafale by the end of the year, to make up for what will be transferred to Greece. Their delivery will take place in 2025. Finally, another 30 Rafale, this time Rafale F4, will be delivered to the French Armed Forces between 2027 and 2030.
According to "La Tribune", with the 12 used Rafale, Greece could save up to € 600 million, since it estimates that respectively new fighters would cost around € 1 billion. She twice referred to the words "ministerial environment" in the text, which may mean that she obtained information about the cost of the 12 used Rafale from high-ranking officials near Parley. If the French newspaper has the right information, € 400 million equals € 33.3 million per used Rafale. Even if he has the right knowledge, however, he does not specify whether the amount concerns exclusively the aircraft or the modifications that Greece wishes. And, of course, it seems impossible to include the necessary support costs.
The reinforcement of the Air Force with 18 Rafale fighters, 6 new and 12 slightly used, was announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis last month at the Thessaloniki International Fair. A few days ago, in an interview with the French newspaper "Le Figaro", he estimated that the first Rafale is quite possible to come to Greece in mid-2021 and the rest to arrive in early 2022 at the latest.
For the Greek part of the Rafale program, the respective programs of Egypt, Qatar and India, as well as a satisfying analysis of what the possible supply of the French fighter brings to the Aegean, you can read in the issue of "Flight" that is circulating .
